in the internet there's no concept of space, well mostly at least, so why a staircase instead of something more fancy like a portal?
it's because walking down a staircase feels very different than crossing a portal!
I believe it's very important to give your visitors ambience and a good sense of environment. Plus virtual stairs take the same energy as a portal so that's not an issue!
oh and before I forget about it, you can always go back upstairs if you wish
